2025 Theatrical Production Design Camp

Directed by Jenn Monk-Reising

Ever wonder what it takes to bring the magic of a theatrical production to life? From breathtaking sets and dazzling costumes to immersive lighting and sound, every show—whether it’s Taylor Swift’s latest world tour or Ann Arbor’s own YPT—begins with a spark of inspiration and creative vision!

Have you ever sat in the audience of a Broadway show or Disney production and thought, How did they create that? or How did they even think of that?! Join us for a week of hands-on magic-making and discover the artistry behind theatrical production design!

COSTUME + HAIR & MAKEUP INTENSIVE CAMP

Step into the world of costume design in this immersive, hands-on camp! Students will work closely with our Creative Director and costumers to explore every stage of the creative process—from initial concepts and renderings to construction techniques that bring costumes to life. Campers get to explore our costume shop, housing over 40,000 pieces, providing endless inspiration and possibilities.

Each day, campers will:

  • Create a new theatrical look, learning hair, makeup, and costume techniques.
  • Choose a script and develop a shareable vision using mood boards and sketches.
  • Design and construct a full costume for a character of their choice—from head (hair & makeup) to toe (costume).
  • Learn how to assemble costumes, plan for quick changes, and prepare for backstage logistics.
  • Participate in a round-robin colleague critique, where they will give and receive design suggestions and feedback, helping refine their creative ideas while building strong teamwork and communication skills.

Campers will build costumes from scratch, ensuring new and exciting projects every session. Whether you dream of designing for Broadway or just love creative storytelling, this camp is your backstage pass to the world of theatrical production!
